I'm a bit late with the updates this month - sorry! Regular readers will already know that the Green Book for May is out, containing the latest in my series of regular security articles, which will continue for as long as the Focus Magazine editor is happy to take them. Unfortunately the editor couldn't find enough space in the Garstang edition so it only appeared in the Over Wyre version, but you can always see the content of these items by clicking on the Articles links below. This month's piece starts to take a look at the user side of things.

This month has seen an even greater range of types of work including setting up a CCTV system for use on a home network! Cleanups are still a major feature, as well as general training and setting up new machines with transfers of data from old machines to the new ones. if there are any clubs or organisations in the area... I've continued work on a talk / presentation about keeping safe online - so if there are any clubs or organisations in the area who would like to take advantage of me at one of your meetings, please give me a call to discuss.

Please keep safe and secure at all times - if in doubt, ask for help!

As always, this month has once again seen a lot of activity in the release of security updates for all the main operating systems and background applications / plugins (for more information on this subject, see Safety Article #3), although there was a bit of problem for some people in April when one of the Microsoft Windows updates went wrong. Microsoft issued a replacement update at the end of April so everyone should be sorted by now. Despite this month's hiccup, here's my regular statement which is well worth repeating - don't forget to make sure you keep your machine fully updated for security patches, Java Updates, anti-virus definitions etc. The bad guys don't let up I'm afraid so there will always be a need to keep vigilant. There are some guidance notes on how to check for and manage updates for Windows, Java and FlashPlayer here in the document library. (The next batch of Microsoft updates will be due very shortly - on Tuesday 14th May.)
